"Waiting for scan"

About: Victoria Hospital / Medical Oncology Victoria Hospital / Radiology

(as a friend),

Diagnosed with gullet cancer, but had to wait 2 weeks for a CT scan, then been told have to wait a further 8 days for the MDT to discuss. Find this strange considering it is cancer, it could grow or get worse, surely these cases are priority.

Dear jupitersy79,

Thank you for raising your concerns about the length of time waiting for a scan. I can assure you that?cancer scans are the highest priority, but demand is very high. MDT meetings involve a large group of specialists meeting to discuss important cases, and have to be arranged when all staff are all available. I'm really sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and know that any delay can be extremely distressing, but I hope that you can be assured that every team in the hospital is dedicated to treating patients as efficiently and effectively as possible.

I recommend that you get in touch with the oncology team with any further concerns.

Best Wishes,

Zoë Maclaughlan

Dear jupitersy79

My name is Murdina MacDonald and I am the Lead Cancer Nurse for NHS Fife. I understand that this waiting period is difficult and frustrating. Receiving a cancer diagnosis is overwhelming, and the uncertainty during this time can be incredibly stressful.

The scheduling of scans and multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions is designed to gather all necessary information, ensuring your treatment plan is precise and effective. The MDT approach brings together specialists who carefully review your case to consider the best possible treatment options for you.

It’s natural to worry about potential progression during this period. however generally cancer does not progress significantly over days or a couple of weeks. The MDT discussion ensures that treatment decisions are well-informed and tailored to provide you with the best possible outcome.

If you’re feeling particularly anxious, I can connect you with Marie Hunter, one of our Advanced Cancer Nurse Specialists within our Upper GI/HPB team, who can offer additional support. Marie can be reached via email at marie.hunter2@nhs.scot. Alternatively, you can contact me directly at murdina.macdonald@nhs.scot for further assistance.

Warm Wishes

Murdina
