"Admitted to PAU with respiratory distress"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care) Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Paediatric Assessment Unit (Children's Assessment Unit)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted to children's A&E and then moved through to PAU in respiratory distress. She was extremely poorly and it was a very worrying time.

For some reason that afternoon the 111 reports weren't coming through so initially we were told by reception we would have a long wait ahead, even with saying my daughter was in respiratory distress and we were advised an ambulance was needed but wasn't available and we would be quicker to drive through.

This is something I believe shouldn't happen again in the future, as my daughter was deteriorating with oxygen levels of 88% on admission and working in health care I was aware of how poorly she was, so I found this comment extremely unhelpful and put more stress and worry on me. Thankfully after highlighting again to the receptionist how poorly she was when she took a turn for the worse in A&E we were seen promptly.

Lorraine was the first to see her and was quick to respond to her deteriorating condition. She kept everyone at ease and my daughter felt safe with her. Gemma also looked after us and made sure we were ok after a pretty traumatic hour. The Dr in A&E was great too.

When we moved through to PAU, we had Ellie looking after us. She was so kind, talked me through everything she was doing and kept a close eye on my daughter all night. The Dr's we spoke to were all really kind, they took the time to make sure my daughter felt comfortable around them and didn't do anything without discussing it with me first. The Reg on that night didn't dismiss my feelings or thoughts and I really appreciated it.

Thankfully after a few days of being home my daughter is now on the mend. Thanks again for the care we received. Hopefully we won't be back anytime soon but I feel reassured that we would be well looked after if we needed to attend again.

Dear DT08,

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

I am sorry to learn you had cause to contact 111 on behalf of your daughter and that she was admitted to hospital, I understand this must have been a very worrying time.

I note from your story that your daughter’s journey of care involved multiple services. I reply on behalf of NHS 24.

I read with concern that the A&E department were not receiving reports from 111 and I would like to investigate if there were any issues on our side that day. If you would like us to review this matter, or if you have any other feedback relating to your call to the 111 service, could I kindly ask you to contact us at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk and include your Care Opinion username and we would be pleased to look into this further.

It is great to hear that your daughter is on the mend.

Thank you once again for sharing your experience.

Best wishes to you both,

Stephanie

Dear DT08

Thank you for leaving feedback following your daughter's admission to PAU with respiratory distress. I see Stephanie has picked up your concerns around the 111 communication and hope that has been helpful.

I was glad to see the care once you got to the Children's Hospital ED department was efficient and kind and I will pass on your thanks to Lorraine, Gemma, Ellie and the medical staff. This sounds like an extremely worrying time, but I am glad to read your daughter recovered so well. It makes such a difference to the teams to receive feedback, so thank you for taking the time to leave this.
