At initial appointment with the physiotherapist at the QEUH, it was very quickly identified that my mobility was compromised by “foot drop” resulting in a higher risk of falling/ injury. A care plan was agreed and this included referral to Orthotics for a TurboMed , a planned trial of a FES Machine, the possibility of a trial of Fampridine Medication and a request for a Consultant Out Patient appointment. The physio also identified alternative supports out with the NHS to support me such as MS Revive and SB Elevate. This was a very positive appointment for me as I felt someone was really looking at me and listening to what my issues were.
Within a couple of months I had been fitted for and received the TurboMed; this has been a positive appliance for my walking and has really helped my mobility.
From the 2 week FES I was able to recognise the benefit of this appliance and how it allowed me to have improved ankle and foot movement; again improving and retaining my mobility. Without the help of the physio and their advice and guidance I would not have been aware of this aid. I have since sourced and bought a machine privately allowing me different mobility options. It is unfortunate that in order to purchase a FES machine you have to go through a private physiotherapist clinic who are unaware of your MS journey; a more streamlined approach would be if this was available through the NHS MS Physio Team. To be able to private purchase through the NHS team with follow up fitting and support would be ideal for coordination of care delivery.
As things stand at the moment I am awaiting for the Fampridine medicine to be dispensed and a Consultant Out Patient appointment. I have engaged with MS Revive and am a regular attendee at the SB Elevate class. Without the holistic approach to my care needs by the physio reaching this point would have been a longer journey for me.
I am very grateful for the holistic assessment, care delivery and follow up from the MS Physiotherapist, it has been much appreciated.
