"Seroma and infection following breast surgery"

About: Belfast City Hospital / Breast Surgery Belfast City Hospital / Outpatients Services District Nursing / Dunmurry District Nursing

(as a service user),

I had a difficult post operative period with seroma and infection and felt very worried.  In addition to attending Outpatient appointments at Belfast City Hospital I was referred to the District Nursing Service of South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust.

I benefited greatly from the expertise and support of the Dunmurry 2 Team led by District Nurse Dot.  Dot was instinctively attentive to all my needs, both physical and mental, and reassured me that having a seroma was not uncommon after surgery.  Nurse Siobhan as well as Dot addressed the issue of my extremely sensitive skin and tried out different types of dressings and bandages.  This care was successfully continued by other nurses such as Lesley Ann, Jocelyn and Patricia.
The leakages seemed endless to me and eventually took 2 months to heal. During this period I received ongoing support and encouragement from the District Nursing Service.  Even when leakages occurred at night I was able to phone the out of hours number for help.
I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to all the District Nursing Service for their dedication and kindness.  You all made a world of difference during a very difficult time.
