"Father entering palliative care"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Acute Medical Unit (AMU) Newry and South Armagh / District Nursing

(as a service user),

Father went into hospital with pains in stomach and jaundice. He had the usual blood tests done and a scan, bloods and scan showed up that there was something not right. He was then told he had cancer in the pancreas. The consultant had said because of other medical issues he had and of course his age they could try to put a drain in, they attempted to do this procedure but was unsuccessful. He was discharged from hospital to receive palliative care at home.

It was all happening so quick, we were all in shock and disbelief that things had taken a turn for the worse. We were told he had only a short time left. The medical team in the hospital said what sort of end of life care did we want for him, so of course we all decided as a family we'd like to take him home and have his family around him. With the help of the staff at C.A.H  and the district nurses from Newtownhamilton, all was arranged and he was very soon home and very comfortable. The nursing care he received from the Newtownhamilton District Nurses was excellent, they helped him attentively right to the end and were always there to support the family and advise.

Huge thank you to Siobhan, Patricia, Jenna and Chloe for all their support and help through his short illness.
