Sadly, I miscarried over Christmas and attended Ward 40/EPU on several ocassions over a ten day period for two scans and a pelvic examination before the miscarriage was confirmed. I later opted for the surgical evacuation in order to terminate the pregnancy. I was very distressed during the whole ordeal but the wonderful care and support I recieved from every single member of staff at the EPU/Ward 40 made a huge difference and I will never forget the kind words and time that everyone gave me. The porter who took me to theatre made such a difference with his kind words at a time when I was really frightened and I will never forget his comforting words, the ladies who brought me my lunch, the lady at the EPU who gave me the news so tactfully and later ensured I was moved away from the unit and into ward 40 (and away from pregnant patients). The anethetist was a lovely chap, very chatty and explained everything he would be doing. My aftercare was great, the lovely lady in recovery and I was given a private cubicle to recover back on the ward. Lunch was also very nice. I cannot be sure, but I think one or two members of the staff may be pregnant themselves but their hospital uniforms mask it, not sure if this is a conscious decision by the hospital but it made all the difference to me if they are - the last thing I'd want to see in the ward itself is an obviously pregnant woman. I cannot thank the staff at Ward 40 enough for helping me get through this awful experience. I truly believe that their care, tact, professionalism and concern have definately helped me and my partner come to terms with what has happened. I wish you all good fortune and happiness for 2014.
