"The effort to get contraception for adult women"

About: Sidwell Street Clinic / Exeter Sexual Health

(as a service user),

The process for an adult woman to get contraception is absolutely disgusting. Having had the IUD for 20 years, I switched to the contraceptive pill. But to get the prescription, I have to call a sexual health clinic every three months, the day of, wait for a telephone appointment, and then get the same prescription I had three months ago.

I can’t order it on the NHS app like any other medications. The GP requires a completely separate review if I want to get it through them, despite having been through it with the sexual health clinic. And at no point is there consideration for someone who works full time and is often in meetings (god forbid a teacher try to access this process).

I feel this process is antiquated, misogynistic, and completely illogical.

Dear adult woman,

Firstly, thank you for your feedback. We are so sorry you have found the process of obtaining your contraception from our service difficult and frustrating.

It is not our usual practice to only give 3 months of contraception without a significant reason. Without knowing your details I would not be able to comment on why this is happening in your case. We would like to explore this with you, if you would like to call us and request to speak to the senior nurse and lead for contraception they would be happy to review this with you. The number is 01392 284966

In response to be able to access this from your GP, we are a confidential service and as such we do not hold the same patient record system and therefore, they will require a separate consultation.

Thank you for sharing your views on access for patients that work full time. We are continually reviewing our service provision and your feedback will be taken into consideration by our senior team.

Best wishes,

Abbey Eboigbe

Senior Nurse
