"In the corridor with no privacy"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My husband is in very poor health and over the past few months he has had two hospital admissions to Craigavon Area Hospital. After the last time I felt impelled to tell his story.

He spent several days in the corridor of a&e before Christmas, he even had a full day where no one gave him any food, they seemingly forgot about him. I fully appreciate the pressure and the staff are just fantastic, it’s the resources they have to work with.

The next time he only spent one night in a&e but then was moved to the ward. He was in the corridor as there was no room in a bay for him, his head was at one toilet door and his feet at another and everyone was going past him with no privacy. He is immune suppressed due to his infusions yet he was in the corridor.

Again the staff are amazing, just so sad to see how poor the resources are, really not sure how him being in a corridor is not seen as a fire/ health and safety risk . How would you feel seeing your husband with such poor health in this situation. He would never complain as he knows how hard the staff work. They can only do their best with the poor resources they are given but in 2025 how can things be so poor, how are things not improving in Craigavon as this has been going on for so long!

Thank you for taking the time to provide your husbands recent experiences of the Emergency Department at Craigavon Area Hospital.

The department continues to be extremely busy with high numbers of patients awaiting a bed on an in-patient ward. Within the department we do not have enough cubicles for all these patients. Unfortunately patients are nursed on the corridor or within the clinical areas as additional patients. We as a department understand this is not ideal for sick patients requiring admission and I couldn't agree more the staff are working tirelessly despite the pressures their face on a daily basis to meet the needs of their patients.

I wish to apologize on behalf of the department that your husband was nursed on the corridor for such a long time. The nursing staff try to isolate patients to the best of their ability when they are immunocompromised but unfortunately other patients acuity and high transmissible infections are prioritized to the already pressured cubicles within the department. In relation to the meals I am not sure how your husband was missed as are catering service is altered daily to reflect their number of patients within the department I wish to also apologize that this happened.

I will share your feedback with the nursing staff as you have highlighted that the staff are fantastic and that they are trying their best despite the pressures. I hope your husband is recovering well following his recent illness's.

Stacey
