"Maternity & neonatal experience"

About: Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38) Ninewells Hospital / Maternity care Ninewells Hospital / Neonatology

(as the patient),

My experience of maternity care at Ninewells hospital was an absolute shambles.

I had been told by one doctor my waters hadn’t broke - they had. But by the time someone else confirmed it I’d missed out on 10 days of antibiotics.

I was further repeatedly told as an inpatient to go home. Despite when I was transferred to another hospital being told I could give birth extremely prematurely, extremely quickly.

Some of the midwifes were incredible and really set my nerves at rest and made me feel confident in my rights and advocating for me and my baby.

Others I found to be completely negligent. Cannulas in my arms for 6 days, all red and inflamed, and when I asked for it to be changed was told I’d be given antihistamines. Despite it being in far longer than the other recommended time and me being an infection risk.

I was then made to feel like I was overreacting, and sensitive. I was also supposed to be on a monitor every 12 hours, and after 48 had to complain and again be made to feel like a burden before they did this.

I was later transferred to another hospital and could not fault the care or guidance by midwives. They listened to my concerns and due to that my baby was born safely. I truly believe in Ninewells this would not have been the case.

The neonatal unit in Ninewells, we were transferred after a week, and I honestly can’t speak highly enough of them.

They went above and beyond in every department. They answered every question, helped calm nerves, and cared for my babies as their own, the nurses deserve far more credit than they get. Their care for the babies as well as parents is impeccable and something I will forever be grateful for.

Dear Abben93

I wish to offer my congratulations to you and your family on the birth of your baby, I hope you are all doing well, and hopefully have been reunited together back home after a stay in the neonatal unit.

I wish to offer my sincere apologies in relation to your experience within our maternity services within NHS Tayside.I am sorry we have placed you in a position during an extremely difficult time where your baby was admitted to our neonatal unit, where you felt your concerns were not acknowledged or care provision was not to our expected standards in the antenatal period.

Due to the anonymity of care opinion, we cannot review your individual concerns, however, we would very much like the opportunity to be in a position to review your care to understand how we progress learning and improvements within our services. If you would feel comfortable, we would encourage you to reach out to tay.feedback@nhs.scot, to share your experience where we can support a review within our senior leadership team.

I wish to thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us, it is really valuable to us as a service to undertand the experiences of our women and familes and ensure their voices guide and direct continual learning and improvements within our service

I wish you and your family all the very best

KIndest regards

Steph Gardiner
