My mother has dementia and fell in December 2023 and broke her hip in the residential home she was living in.
After being operated she wasn’t able to use any walking aids to get about due to her dementia. She was therefore moved to a nursing home and was in bed almost all the time. When she sat in a fold up wheelchair she became sore very quickly because of her hip OP and also due to muscle wastage. I felt that my mum‘s human rights were not being met being in bed all the time.
I therefore requested that an occupational therapist assess her again to see if any thing could be done to help my mum be out of bed more and be more integrated with the other residents in her nursing home.
Occupational therapy were on the job very quickly and requested a special, comfy wheelchair for my mum . The headrest on this goes back and her feet can also be raised. The arms on it are also really soft and wide like an normal armchair.
I live in Germany and my brother called me per video last night. He was visiting my mum. There she was sitting, smiling and fully alert in her new wheelchair which had been delivered and set up for her. I haven’t seen her so happy in a long time. She was smiling away and had been able to take part in activities yesterday that were going on in the home. This wheelchair is like a life-saver for her.
My brother and I are so happy that occupational therapy have been so understanding, helpful and so efficient acquiring this wheelchair, and also so quickly.
I now feel better being here in Germany, knowing that my dear mum is not lying in bed all the time and knowing she is now able to enjoy activities and the company of other residents.
A big thank you to Eilish, the occupational therapist.
