"I felt like a valued human being"

About: Community Nursing / District Nursing NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service)

(as a service user),

After a wait of 18 months, I had a total hip replacement on January 10 and sent home the next day. I'm almost 73 years old, live alone, and my family is in Vancouver, so, although I have great friends who have taken good care of me, I do feel a bit on my own. Two days after I got home, my dressing started to peel off; I called 111, spoke to a kind fellow called Mohammed, and two nurses were at my home within a half hour. A couple of days later, same thing! On the 24th, the district nurse took out the staples, but today came back to get one that was missed. She reassured me that it all looked good and I didn't need to be concerned. I was never made to feel like I was a bother or worrying unnecessarily or anything other than a valued human being who needed some help. I think NHS111 is a fantastic service, and the district nurses are absolutely the best. I have nothing but praise! Many thanks! (Trust me, you don't want to see a picture!)

Dear Izzie72,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion.

I was sorry to learn you underwent a hip operation, this must have been a very challenging time, especially without having your family nearby. It is great to hear that your friends have taken good care of you.

I reply on behalf of NHS 24. It is lovely to hear that you found Mohammed so kind and that you found 111 to be a fantastic service.

If you wish to share some more information with me, including your Care Opinion user name, then I could identify the staff who managed your calls to NHS 24 and share your Care Opinion story with them. We always like to ensure that staff see positive feedback to reinforce for them how valued their care is when people call our services. You can contact me by email at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

Thank you again for sharing your experience and I wish you a very speedy recovery.

Best wishes,

Stephanie
