"Superb care from a wonderful team"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

I had a colonoscopy under the fast track pathway, after a test at my GP showed an abnormal result. I previously visited the Grantham Endoscopy Unit a couple of years ago for a flexible sigmoidoscopy.

Despite knowing the process for what was going to happen I was nervous, but speaking to the nurses on the phone in the days leading up to the procedure was reassuring and only the start of their amazing care.

When I arrived I was greeted by their lovely receptionist and was put at ease straight away as she giggled with me about the fiddly toilet door lock. My husband was able to wait with me until Jennie called me through to check over my paperwork. Her manner was so friendly and welcoming, I felt able to ask all of my silly questions that I might otherwise have swallowed.

I was then shown down the corridor to a bed with dignity pants and gown ready to change into, and curtains all around it for privacy. I was worried about accessing the toilet at this point, but there was no restriction or judgement on how often I nipped across to use it.

The cannula was fitted 1st try by Rachel, and then I was wheeled into the procedure room. Dr Nair introduced himself and the team, and involved me in the checking of my details. I was able to mention my Raynaud's and allergy, and felt safe and listened to.

I was expecting a fair amount of discomfort during the procedure, but I hardly felt a thing. Rachel and Debbie checked on me regularly, and when I changed position, Hayley was kind enough to make sure my feet were covered by the blanket. They chatted to me throughout, which was a nice distraction, but also spoke honestly when I asked about what was being seen on the screen.

I can't fault the care or service; from booking the appointment to choosing my post-procedure biscuits, I was looked after with compassion and kindness. I know how much hard work goes on behind the scenes to create a smooth patient journey, so to see it in action was awesome and I am truly grateful
