"Upset by dismissive attitude"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Breast Services

(as a service user),

In 2018 I received surgery, chemo and radiotherapy for triple negative breast cancer. For the first 5years I was seen by the surgical team after each mammogram.  I was advised that I would be screened for a further 5years mammogram only. So I would be screened till 2028.

Recently I phoned Aberdeen Royal Infirmary mammography dept. to ask about my mammogram which is due next month. I spoke to a person who was most abrupt and said you’re not gettin', as the standards had changed.  They told me to phone the surgeon secretary if I wasn’t happy.  I felt like I had been slapped in the face, with this NHS employee's abrupt manner and uncaring attitude. They said I would be getting a letter. I’m very upset by their dismissive attitude.

I’ve spoken to MACMILLAN navigators at ARI to be advised that they are disbanding due to the funding be pulled.  Do patients really matter any more? We all understand the  NHS is in dire straights.  But every patient deserves to be treated with dignity and care.

Over the last 4 years we have been fortunate to receive funding from Macmillan Cancer Support which has allowed us to provide a Navigator service which has supported our Clinical Nurse Specialists by providing telephone support to our patients.

This funding from Macmillan has now come to an end and unfortunately, given the significant financial pressures we are facing in NHS Grampian, we are unable to continue to provide the Macmillan Navigator service.

We are working hard to put alternative arrangements in place, but we will not be able to offer a like for like replacement of the Navigator service. Clinical Nurse Specialists working in the various cancer specialities previously provided this service and they will continue to offer support as needed.

We would like to reassure our patients that support is still available to them through their Clinical Nurse Specialists.
