My fiancé and I visited the local practice when our baby was 8 days old with signs of thrush. Unfortunately we feel our visit could have been handled a lot better.
The nurse wasn’t sure if it was thrush, when I asked if we could get a swab of her mouth were told that it wasn’t possible (even though we now know it is). It was also myself that had to ask if I should be getting treated as well considering I was breastfeeding and was experiencing pain inside my breast and my nipples were pink and uncomfortable, the nurse wasn’t sure so went and spoke to a GP then reached out to the pharmacist.
The pharmacist popped his head in and said yes, mum should be treated too, but I was given a prescription for oral medication instead of Fluconazole and cream for topical use. It meant for 7 days I was treating both myself and my daughter for no reason, passing it back and forth to one another.
As my symptoms got progressively worse and was in complete agony I had to give up breastfeeding which broke my heart. When I phoned up and received a telephone appointment the following week with a doctor, I believe they could have handled the situation better. Telling me over the phone that no one comes to their work to make a mistake was unnecessary, I wanted my case to be a learning one to the nurse. She too mistreated me, giving me 7 capsules to take orally ignoring the rule of a loading dose.
I feel my daughter and I have been let down by the practice and hope my case can be a learning to prevent any other first time/new mum to have to go through the same.
