"Supported me on my therapeutic journey"

About: HMP Grendon / Substance Misuse Service

(as a service user),

Eleni has been my support worker for my alcohol addiction. What was good was they take time with me and understand my problems and help keep me in check, especially when I keep getting urges for booze.

During 2019 for a whole year I've been on a self destructive path after surviving a rape encounter, so I turned to booze and it became my best friend and my greatest enemy and I allowed it to destroy my soul and become a monster, friendships became toxic/unstable, self harm and suicidal thoughts became real and all of this made me feel like a monster, an animal, became 'the punisher' and ended up committing a crime while under the influence of alcohol.

I don't blame it as much as I blame myself for allowing it in my system, my sin, my ultimate penance. Now I seek true redemption, address my criminal behaviour, develop better relationship skills, not allow my inner monster out ever again.

The Darts department have played a part in my full recovery alongside Eleni. I'm very grateful for the team keeping in contact with me to support me while in Grendon on my therapeutic journey. What could be better? nothing at the moment as they help me quite enough especially with regular check ups, knowing I'm not truly alone.

Thank you so much for sharing the powerful story of your previous alcohol use and your journey through this into recovery.

It's clear you have done a lot of reflecting on the reasons why you made the choices you did.

What is also clear is that you are very serious about maintaining the changes you have made. It's gratifying to hear how helpful DART and Eleni have been to you as part of this process. The fact that you were given the time to explore and work on your issues at your own pace seems to have been of real benefit to you.

It's also great to hear you still have regular check-ins from Eleni.

Good luck in your continued recovery journey!
