"I feel completely let down"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Maternity

(as a service user),

I was so excited to be expecting my first baby, I had all the symptoms, felt completely drained, nauseous, starving, my boobs hurt, and then early in the new year all my symptoms went.

I saw midwives for my 8 and 10 week appointments who I expressed my concerns to, and these concerns were completely dismissed but unfortunately I was right. My baby only made it to 7 weeks and 3 days, and I only found out after trusting my own instincts and booking a private scan at 11 weeks.

I feel completely let down by the midwife team. I should have been happy and excited throughout this month but instead I was trying to put on a brave face because I had been told ‘it’s completely normal’.

In my opinion, sometimes it’s probably best to listen to expectant mothers as they can be right even if they haven’t done it before. I would have very much appreciated an early scan from the NHS after expressing valid concerns about my baby.

Dear Oopysop

Thank you for taking time to feedback, I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I can only imagine how painful and frustrating this must be for you.

As healthcare providers, our priority should always be to listen to patients, validate their concerns, and ensure they receive the care and attention they deserve. Your instincts and feelings about your body are incredibly important, and I’m truly sorry if they were not taken seriously.

If you would like me to investigate your experience please email me joanna.black@nhs.net and I can investigate further.

Best wishes

Jo
