"Possum"

About: WestMARC (Glasgow)

(as a service user),

I'm in my 50s  and I've got cerebral palsy and am a full-time wheelchair user. Apart from working my power wheelchair I'm unable to do anything for myself  so that's why possum is such a great help to me, without possum I would be unable to stay at home on my own because I wouldn't be able to get help if I needed it. I would be unable to answer the door, or phone and make phone calls to get help. Since 1989 my life has totally changed for the better because I can stay on my own if I want to or if I am unable to go out because of the weather with the help of possum I can get help if I require it. I can make phone calls and answer the phone, I can work my tv through the possum and turn my lights on and off.

Without the use of possum I would have no quality of life, I would be dependent on my partner and carers. There's people out there with physical disabilities who are worse off than me and without the use of possum they could be dependent. I feel you need to keep the possum system going because I learned this morning that I could do more with the possum than I knew of. It's not the fault of people with physical disabilities who need help and support with day to day life, don't take the opportunity of the use of possum away from us because if you do that you are stopping us from having a quality of life like we have now.

Dear aprilxs97,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of the importance of having an environmental control system like the Possum. We appreciate your feedback and the positive effect, it has on your quality of life.

I’m sorry that at the last appointment, that it has come across that we are stopping the possum. Environmental control systems like the possum will continue to be available for service users that meet the national criteria.

If you would like to discuss your requirements or have concerns, please call WestMARC on 0300 790 0129 and ask to be put through to myself.

Regards

Karl Lees,

Interim Clinical Lead,

WestMARC,

Queen Elizabeth University Hospital,

Glasgow.
