"They were just just so attentive from start to finish"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Plastic Surgery & Burns (wards 45, 47, 48 & 49)

(as a relative),

In December 2024 my husband attended Glasgow plastics to have surgery done on his foot. We had been referred by local GP and had waited a fair bit of time for the appointment but this was what we expected and understood why.

We arrived at our appointment with Dr Gilmour early one morning … there were him, his assistants and another GP fairly new to role. They all straight away put us at ease. My husband had suffered a stroke 2 years ago which impacted his speech and ability to communicate easily … they took all this on board and very extremely patient with him and listened to any questions or concerns he had about having an operation or procedure done.

When the consultation was complete and we agreed on what treatment was needed. The Dr went onto explain next steps and had mentioned it may take a few weeks to get an appointment, again we understood this and were just so grateful that we were going to have the procedure done. He then sympathised with us on how far we would have to travel and how many other trips we were going to have to make in order to compete procedure. So he said if we are ok with this can I ask you to come back in the afternoon and I will this all for you today and you can be back in your feet again properly by Christmas. this was amazing … we were shocked at this proposal and because of how nice and professional the whole team had been and reassuring us of any concerns it was an absolute yes from us.

They then offered us a room, multiple cups of tea biscuits and checked in on us regularly while we waited … they were so attentive even though they were still attending to other patients.

When we went back into the treatment room again Dr Gilmour and his staff relaxed my husband completely and chatted to him continuously about random things to keep him off what was actually going on. And before he knew it it was done.

They then made sure that we were fit to travel home and organised our local district nurses to attend twice weekly to change his dressings and requested regular photos so they could keep and eye on the healing. This proved to be the best and most effective way of monitoring the healing… we emailed twice weekly up until the end of January. At one point we even had an email on their day off !!

They were just just so attentive from start to finish and we really do not know how we can thank Dr Gilmour and his staff enough. They are a great team and a huge credit to the NHS. THANK YOU

Thank you for taking the time to share you and your husband's recent experience at the Plastic Surgery Unit at GRI. It is good to hear that you husband was treated quickly after a long wait and that you report that it was a positive experience. I will share your kind comments with Mr Gilmour and the wider team. I hope your husband has continued to recover and send you my best wishes

Kind regards

C Blake
