"Our experience has been so stressful and disjointed"

About: Gynaecology / Obstetric & Gynaecology Ultrasound Perth Royal Infirmary / Radiology (X-rays and Scans)

(as the patient),

I was due my first pregnancy ultrasound. There was nervousness as I really didn’t know how far along I was but I was gaining weight quite quickly. I had an appointment at PRI. It was difficult to coordinate getting it off work as my husband works away. It was then cancelled and rescheduled for later in the week. It was a lot of work to rework everyone’s shifts and make sure we could make the new appointment date. It was then cancelled week of. I called and asked if there was anything that could be done but I was told there’s nothing that could be done, what did I expect them to do, and Ninewells may or may not call me to make an appointment.

Eventually I got a call from Ninewells for an appointment. I got a voicemail saying I’d been booked in for 9am in a couple days time. I was travelling in some distance so it was really difficult to get in for 9am and find parking. I only had that voicemail so I had no idea where I was going and was just rushing around asking for directions and running down corridors trying to find where to go. Because of the last minute appointment there was absolutely no chance my husband could attend which was a real shame. It’s our first baby and we were really excited, but our experience has been so stressful and disjointed that we’re worried about what will happen next.

Dear Omeganh37

I wish to firstly congratulate you on your pregnancy news, I hope you are keeping well and enjoying this exciting time planning to welcome a first baby as a couple and family

I am sorry your original USS appointment was cancelled, we have experienced some unforeseen circumstances over the last few weeks. However, I wish to reassure you, our sonographers are prioritising our USS waiting list to limit the impact of the cancellations for women accessing our service. During your rescheduled scan, your sonographer will confirm what pregnancy screening options you would wish and any service influence to access to this screening will be considered and actioned as appropriate.

Our USS department supports across Tayside wide, and whilst we try our best to ensure you USS can be facilitated at your local midwifery unit, there are times this is not possible and we will offer an alternative location for your scan. We are working hard to rectify this situation where possible, with increased capacity available within our midwifery units in Perth and Angus in the near future.

If you would like further support with your concerns, you can contact our patient experience team tay.feedback@nhs.scot

I wish you all the very best for your pregnancy

Kindest regards

Steph Gardiner
