"The good, bad and the ugly"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Ayrshire Doctor on Call (ADOC) NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service)

(as the patient),

I recently had the need to call 111 at 3 am due to severe pain in my groin and testicle  now going on for 6 weeks . Having gone to the doctors, who examined me and arranged a hospital ultrasound. From there I continued to have pain and poor sleep pattern.

I called 111 services and discussed my problem with the call handler who was very helpful throughout my discussion. I was then passed to the nurse, who discussed my health  and suggested they would arrange an out of hours call out to contact me. That was very helpful to me and both members of the team were polite and helpful .

That was the good point of the service thanks.

The bad point is when I received the call from out of hours around 6am the doctor was clear during the discussion they probably could not help , but they agreed to come out to my house, reluctantly I might add .

The doctor discussed my condition, pain in groin and testicle, and other health checks. That was fine and stated they could not see or find the reason for the pain in the groin or testicle. The answer then I said will hopefully be found during an upcoming MRI scan.

During my examination we discussed their visit.

The Ugly side of this was,

During the examination, the doctor asked about my skin condition as they had never seen it before.

I was happy to explain to the doctor it was a rare condition called  PC  with no cure for it, albeit it had nothing to do with my reason for their visit.

It was clear to me in the original phone call that the doctor did not want to come to my house.

It was at that point the doctor's reply to me was the skin condition is the problem with my groin and testicle pain . In my view, that was an ignorant comment to make.

It seemed not knowing anything about the condition I have had for over 70 years they became an expert in 5 minutes and did not accept my comment that they know nothing about it.

I stated in my my entire life never has this caused me to have internal pain in my body. The condition only effects the outer skin of the body forming cysts .

I feel that the doctor's attitude was ignorant, they came across like they had suddenly become an expert in the condition.

That was rude, unprofessional and thoughtless  of a doctor on call. I feel they reacted that way because they did not wish to come out to check my health concern with my groin and testicle pain.

During that period my wife was present in the hallway waiting for an overview of the visit. She was  not impressed with the doctor's comments.

The doctor left me and I was very angry with his ignorant and thoughtless  attitude.

Dear tigerwf99

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following your recent contact with Ayrshire Doctors on Call.

I am very sorry to read about the situation you have described. Please be assured that this is not the person centred care that we strived to provide. Whilst we always aim to provide care that is safe, caring and respectful, we do recognise that sometimes we get it wrong. When we do, we are committed to learning and improving. Hearing experiences, good and bad, directly from our patients or their relatives is one of the best ways for us to capture this valuable feedback.

Unfortunately, it is difficult for us to look into specific concerns raised as Care Opinion is completely anonymous. However, I have passed your comments to the Service Manager so that your experience can be shared with the wider Team for reflection and learning.

Please accept my best wishes and thank you once again for taking the time to acknowledge your care experience.

Kind Regards

Pamela
