"My A&E experience"

About: Royal Albert Edward Infirmary / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I telephoned 111 and explained my symptoms.  I told them my back pain was causing me to be incontinent in both areas.  I am barely able to walk and my bowel movements are changeable. I was advised to go to A&E and take a small bag with me as I was likely to be admitted.

My son drove me to the hospital and I entered the waiting room.  The room was tiny and was absolutely crammed, there were no seats for many of the people. The notification board stated that there was a 17 hour wait to see a medic and a 50 hour wait for a bed.

I sat there for a short time before I had an accident.  As I didn't want to sit in my own urine for 17 hours, I decided to go home and take more pain killers.  I am sure not all the people in there were emergencies.  They should really be screened on arrrival. It looked like something out of a Charles Dickens novel.
