I have prostate cancer which was treated with chemotherapy in 2018. The treatment was extremely successful, but lately there have been signs that the cancer was becoming more active again. My oncology consultant suggested a treatment of radiotherapy.
On arrival at the reception on the first day, I was shown a high degree of care and respect. Everything was explained patiently, even though I needed things gone over a number of times. Whilst sitting in the reception (for the prostate you need to drink water 40 minutes before the treatment), I became concerned that other patients were being told to go to the left or to the right. I needn’t have worried. I was escorted to the waiting area outside the treatment room. The reception staff were well aware that this was my first visit.
When I arrived a week later for my second session, I was ready to provide my name and date of birth. It wasn’t required. The staff said good morning and told me I would need to have my water completed by a certain time. I was completely floored. How can anyone remember me and my name when they must have so many people passing through each day.
Similarly, after my final session, I bumped into one of the radiographers in the corridor. She said that must have been my last treatment and she hopes it all goes well for me.
All in all, my visit to radiotherapy was made so much easier by the kindness and caring nature shown by every one of the staff.
