"All staff provided excellent care to our son"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Accident & Emergency Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Orthopaedics (Ward 3C) University Hospital Wishaw / Paediatrics wards (19 & 20)

(as a service user),

My son was diagnosed with irritable hip, and at his hospital check up a week later, the doctors suspected something wasn't right. Following some tests, he was admitted and eventually ended up at Glasgow Children's Hospital diagnosed with osteomyelitis in his femur. We started in Wishaw on the paediatric ward, where we spent a couple of nights waiting for a bed to be free at Glasgow, and spent 5 more days at Glasgow having more tests and treatments.

Every member staff we dealt with at both hospitals were amazing, but the orthopedic team at Glasgow went above and beyond. We were told to arrive at Glasgow A&E and were seen after only a short wait. A trauma liaison nurse came to meet us (Wishaw had called ahead so they were expecting us) and after an x-ray and a visit from one of the registrar doctors, we were taking up to the ward. The ward itself was comfortable and the facilities like the play room made a stay with a baby (he was 11months at the time) so much more manageable.

They were booked in for an mri the next day, and although nothing prepares you for having to watch your baby go under anaesthetic, the staff were all amazing and explained everything and supported us along the way. The consultant came to tell us the diagnosis, and introduced us to the weekend consultant, so there was continuity of care all the way.

The nurses on the ward were helpful with all our questions, and the dietician came to visit and check what food he needed as he had a milk allergy. The children's hospital was clearly well set up for families and the facilities available made a stressful stay that much easier. Although we wish he hadn't been ill and we hadn't needed the stay, we are so grateful to the staff and the hospital for providing excellent care to our son, and to all the other children that need their help.

Dear Phoenixqp99

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback with us. We are very grateful that you took the time to acknowledge the care and support your family received.

It is truly rewarding to hear that every member of our team, from the paediatric ward to the Orthopaedic team, made a positive impact during your son's treatment. We are particularly pleased that the Orthopaedic team at Glasgow went ‘above and beyond’.

Your words highlight the dedication and hard work of our trauma liaison nurses, registrar doctors, consultants, nurses, and dieticians. We are glad that the facilities, like the playroom, contributed to making your stay more manageable, especially with a young child.

We will ensure that your kind words are shared with the staff.

Take care

Nicole
