"Waiting in AE for 12hrs without seeing a doctor"

About: Rotherham Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I was initially at my gps for a blood test.

About 9.00pm l received a phone call from a doctor who asked me some questions about the blood test. He told me I needed urgent treatment for my magnesium levels. Then he said he wanted me to go to A&E . So I asked him what would happen when I got there he said he would tell the reception I was going and why.

My husband took me up and the reception didn't know a thing about me. When we had given them my information she handed me a plastic band and told me to take a seat.

About an hour went by and i went into triage. He took my blood pressure, asked some questions about my health and I explained what had gone off and why I was there but it didn't seem to make much difference. 2hrs after that I had bloods taken and an ECG then that was it. After 3AM i didn't see anyone called in to see a doctor.

At about 6am the triage nurse got me back into a room to take my BP again

I was seen by a doctor at about 9.00am and he then told me I shouldn't have gone to hospital, it could have waited while the morning. I wasn't quick enough, I should have said to him well it is morning now. In my opinion when a doctor tells you to get up to A&E urgently, you go.

From there he sent me to B6 a medical ward there we had another 3hrs wait. Both my husband and myself were shattered and hungry. So we asked if we could have a drink and something for me to eat because I am a type2 diabetic + we hadn't had our medications because you never expect to be waiting 12hrs. I did get a drink and eventually a sandwich.

I have never been so disgusted in the way not only me but other people were treated who had been waiting with me.

We eventually got home about 1.30pm.

Hello, my name is Samantha, Head of Patient Experience and Involvement at the Hospital. I was sorry to read of your recent experience when attending the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre and Ward B6 recently. It is always our intention to provide the best service possible and as such disappointing when our services fall below the expectations of our patients and their families. If you would like the Patient Experience Team to look into why there was such a long wait, may I ask that you contact the Patient Experience Team on 01709 424461 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm or alternatively you can email the team at the following address, your.experience@nhs.net

Kindest regards Samantha

Update posted by Jeant (the patient)

I must add the care on B6 was ok. The last time I was on there was Sunday. I had to have my bloods repeated. There were about 5 people waiting and they had come from A.E and I spoke to an elderly couple and was told that they had got to AE early hours of Sunday morning and they were shattered two more were trying to get some sleep so I thought they must have been up all night as well.
