"There's genuine interest and attention given to him"

About: Borders General Hospital / Speech & Language Therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

We had a relatively long wait for speech and language to do in person therapy with our son but as soon as it began I noticed massive improvements in him immediately and the lady working with him is brilliant iv attended a session and witnessed myself how engaged my son is and the way the work is done is fun and he enjoys it. The lady has also given me a huge amount of information and the same worksheets as she is doing in order to help at home which I have been doing and the difference in him is unbelievable.

Being given the right tools and knowledge to know how I can support my child at home and improve things for him, from the lady carrying out his therapy, has massively sped up the learning for him and improved his speech problems so much already, such so, this should in theory reduce the time needed to correct the errors/problems he has thus fixing the problem faster.

The only negative I would give the service is the allocated number of sessions given to a child which is outwith the control of the therapists, I believe this is due to a lack of funding which is really sad as some parents/carers may not have the time/confidence to give their child the extra time I'm able to thus affecting the child's needs to engage quickly to ensure the sessions are successful rather than it being a child led process as far as time/sessions goes.

The communication between the speech therapist and support worker regarding how the sessions with my son go/have gone, is second to none.

There's genuine interest and attention given to him and I'm updated at every step whether it be via phone call or notes on his progress sheet of paper to say what he did with them at any time. I'm able to approach/contact and successfully speak with the therapist and/or support worker and have never had any issues what so ever since 1:1 has started in person.

The only issues have been senior staff leaving their role which hasn't impacted my child what so ever.

He's maintained the same support worker throughout and she always attends on the days and times she is scheduled for with him for his sessions, she has gone above and beyond in order to help reassure me and empowered me with the knowledge and tools to improve my child's communication skills and if she is unable to answer a question or needs advise before giving me the answer to anything iv asked, she always does so and gets back to me.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post feedback about the Speech & Language Therapy Service. I am so pleased to hear that you can see a difference in your child's communication; and thank you doing follow up work at home.

I note your concerns around the session allocation; please be assured that if a child does require more sessions than those initially allocated, then the SLT can have a quick chat with their line manager and more sessions can be offered as required
