"Fitting at prosthesis clinic"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Breast Services Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cancer Services (Medical Oncology) Outpatients / Prosthesis Clinic

(as a service user),

I had a very uplifting experience today.  I had a lumpectomy a year past December and because of complications, my breast was reduced in size.  The breast care nurses had not mentioned that they could refer me to the prosthesis clinic, but when I attended a Breast cancer course, a breast care nurse was there, and she said if I contacted them, they could refer me.

I got an appointment within a month. :) I had been feeling a bit low as I could not see any nice underwear and been wearing very loose-fitting sporty bras.  Elaine showed me a number of different styles and fitted a breast form.  It was great to have some lacy underwear that was comfy.  I am no longer lopsided when I look in the mirror.

Today has been so good for my self esteem, though it might not be good for my pocket as I have been pointed in the direction of some lovely appropriate swimwear and bras.  My only sadness is that I had to learn about it from a course and I was not automatically referred.  My surgeon told me they could not rectify my lopsided breast.

Good afternoon Aberdeen quine,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your uplifting experience at your prosthesis appointment. I am sorry to hear that you have been left with a size difference following complications with your treatment however it is wonderful to hear that your appointment with Elaine has improved your self esteem.

It is helpful to get feedback on our services in order to celebrate achievements or indeed highlight where things could be improved and identify areas for learning. It is especially nice to receive positive feedback and I have shared your comments with Elaine and the wider Breast nursing team.

I am also sorry to hear that we appear to have missed an opportunity to signpost you to the prosthesis department but I am reassured that a breast care nurse was able to highlight this to you at an external event. We make every attempt to ensure that our care is person centred and through sharing of your feedback with the wider team will look at ways in which we can prevent missed opportunities in the future. If you would like to contact me to discuss this further please email gram.womensservices@nhs.scot.

Kind regards,

Nataleigh McGonagle
