I was diagnosed with cancer in July of last year at Royal Stoke Hospital after an emergency operation. I had a wonderful surgical team and I am grateful for the care I received there. I now have an excellent oncologist and specialist team. It took me a long time to cope with the diagnosis and to decide whether to accept chemotherapy treatment. It felt overwhelming. Eventually I did accept it and went for my pre assessment with my parents at Stafford Chemotherapy suite. It was invaluable and we were impressed with how comprehensive and informative it was. I think the pre-assessment helps you to absorb a lot of important information and allows you to ask questions and raise any fears or issues you might have. Chemotherapy is daunting and it helps the process seems less daunting. The first day of treatment went well. The unit has a nice atmosphere and the staff are always cheerful and helpful despite being extremely busy and short staffed. My nurse gave me a tip on keeping my hands warm so it is easier to get a cannula in and as l said to her at the end of the day it was not half as bad as I had thought it was going to be. So for anyone who is worried about what the treatment will be like do not let fear grip you. Ask questions and ask for help. I have just been for my second cycle and I was confident enough to be by myself for some of the day with my parents supporting me later on. I am not saying there will be no problems or side effects from chemotherapy but I feel there is a whole team of people who are willing to help and provide back up. Thank you.
