"Felt like I had to self discharge"

About: Borders General Hospital / General Medicine

(as a service user),

I was left for 24 hours without food, 18 hours without liquid and 18 hours without vital medication or pain relief. I have dysphasia so am unable to swallow but already had a functional cannula in place so this could easily have been utilised. Instead I was told I had refused medication so would have to suffer and boy, did I suffer.

I felt that if I remained on the ward I would be left to die in agony (I overheard staff members say I was on the pathway) so I self-discharged.

I have been left traumatised and terrified of ever being admitted to BGH in the future and have refused to leave home when that has been suggested.

Some of the staff on Ward 4 have only one volume and make personal comments about the patients under their care. One staff member informed me their job title was bum cleaner, which I felt showed the level of job satisfaction and lack of awareness of how vital this role is.

Sorry but I think BGH needs radical reform. From what I witnessed I feel there is a poor culture which was all too apparent to the patients.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback, what you describe is certainly not the standard of care we seek to provide for our patients.

Can I request that you contact our patient experience team on either 01896 826719 or patient.experience@borders.scot.nhs.uk this will allow us to capture more detail, enabling us to investigate fully.

Thank You

Elaine Dickson
