"Regarding Refusal to Allow At-Home Miscarriage Management"

About: Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73) / Early Pregnancy Assessment Service

(as the patient),

I am writing to express my profound disappointment and anger regarding the handling of my recent miscarriage by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Specifically, I am appalled by their refusal to allow me to manage my miscarriage at home, despite this being a clinically supported option and my explicit preference.

I feel this decision not only disregards my autonomy and right to make decisions about my own body, but also expects me to be subjected to a degrading and disrespectful experience. Being expected to undergo medical management while sitting in a ward in a group setting is deeply humiliating, intrusive, and entirely inappropriate for me. At one of the most vulnerable moments of my life, I am stripped of dignity and respect, with no regard for my emotional or psychological wellbeing.

Their refusal to respect my request to manage my miscarriage at home compelled me to reach out to another NHS Trust, where I was finally given the autonomy to deal with my miscarriage under my own terms—in the privacy and comfort of my home. The contrast in care was stark and only highlights the failings of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde in providing compassionate, patient-centred care.

The option of at-home medical management is clearly outlined as safe and appropriate in national guidelines, such as NICE guidelines. I feel that denying me this option is not only medically unjustified, but also a blatant failure to uphold basic principles of patient care and respect.

Their actions caused unnecessary physical, emotional, and psychological distress during an already devastating time. This was not just a matter of poor service—it was a fundamental failure in providing adequate care and respecting patient rights.

Dear belonga82,

We appreciate you sharing your care experience. I wanted to start by sincerely apologising for the upsetting event you went through at such a vulnerable time and to reassure you that we actively consider and act upon any input you provide in order to improve our services.

Given the anonymous nature of care opinions it might be more suitable to share your experience through the formal complaints process, which can help us better understand and investigate your care. The formal complaints procedure can be initiated by contacting the complaints team via their email address, complaints@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Kind Regards,

Tracy Orr

Lead Midwife

Thanks Tracy, I have already submitted a complaint and I believe it is under investigation but I thought it would be good to share my experience so other woman know what to expect when it comes to medical management through PRMH.
