My young son has been receiving treatment for VUR (urine reflux). He was recently operated on due to ongoing UTI's and several admissions to hospital to undergo bi-lateral deflux. He has previously undergone a VCUG and an operation elsewhere where the treatment was excellent.
As part of the ongoing investigations he requires a DMSA scan which was taking place in Monklands, to check his kidneys for scarring. This scan should have been done around 4 months old however was initially delayed due to no availability of contrast for the VCUG, i believe, which was to be done first. There was a further delay as he had a UTI which would not have been a factor had the scans been done when he was originally meant to have them done.
We eventually got the appointment and attended. The team were unable to cannulate my son despite 3 attempts - 1 in his hand and then both feet. During this time my son required to be held securely by 2 nurses whilst the attempts were made, which was naturally distressing for him. Upon asking about creams, sucrose or other alternatives to ease the process for him, I was advised they were an adult unit and only undertook children's scans every 3 months.
I feel that they were not equipped in any way to support my child with the procedure and when asked about the next steps, I was simply told an appointment would be sent for the next clinic in 3 months time. I asked would something be done differently then and was told no. I asked what would happen if they couldn't cannulate my child at the next appointment and was not really given any solutions. There was no appreciation for the journey my child had been on, no appreciation for how us as parents were anxious about the results. In fact we were told his kidneys would be fine, which i find incredible that someone would make a statement given the multiple UTI's my child had, the urosepsis, the reflux and several admissions to hospital how anyone could be so sure was beyond me, without further testing and previous ultrasounds that showed heterogenous kidneys.
Upon doing further research I am now aware that there are sprays and small ultra sound machines that could have been considered as alternatives for my son. I would hope that my feedback be taken to consider urgent improvements required in the unit to make the process more efficient and definitely more patient friendly.
