A few months ago, I experienced a miscarriage.
The care given by midwife Elizabeth was an example of how amazing people can be despite the strain of the job. Elizabeth was a friendly face who I had previously met in my first pregnancy, but subsequently helped me through a sad end to my recent pregnancy. Elizabeth provided empathy, reassurance and support both times I attended the EPU service.
However, my experience with the ultrasound department was not the same. Although, I must say that my interactions with staff within the ultrasound room was fine. When I attended the ultrasound department I was placed in a separate waiting area from women who were attending their pregnancy scans, this may be well sought after by some women but I felt personally it was more of a negative sat out the way on your own. The waiting area is directly across from the room doors for the ultrasound which means that as you are sitting you are seeing people happily come out of their scans at times heavily pregnant.
However, my main concern was that when I walked into the room to attend my scan, to confirm my miscarriage, I was greeted with the scan of the couple prior to myself on the screens. This was very blatantly a very happy and healthy baby. At the time it was not even mentioned or apologised for. I personally shrugged it off with my family, however months later it is still something that sticks in my mind. I only raise this to assist anyone else who may have to attend for the same reasons who may be more affected than myself.
