"Having severe bowel pain"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

Recently I saw my gastroenterologist doctor at RVH who I’ve been seeing for just over 2 years. Test after test everything came back normal but I am still getting the horrific pain in RUQ of my abdomen. Just for context, I’ve had 2 twisted bowels in my life before and the pain is very reminiscent. Now I know I don’t have a twisted bowel because earlier in January I went for a test were I had a series of X-rays after drinking a barium so they could watch it travel through the bowel.

Upon doing these tests the Doctor doing them told me and showed me I had prominent small bowel loops and that was causing my horrific pain. So upon seeing my doctor they totally dismissed this as the cause of my pain and said it was neurological and was the function of my bowel that wasn’t right. To which I told them that’s not going to take away the severe pain I’m going through after they had said nothing surgically could be done / or that they feel nothing can be done surgically. If they think the structure of my bowel is ok but it’s not functioning right then surely the part that’s not functioning properly, You would then remove that part so I don’t have to go through this pain anymore.

I’ve been housebound for the past 2+ years, can’t eat anything substantial, can’t go anywhere out of fear the pain will strike, Over 3 stone in weight loss because all I can eat is tea & toast or toast and scrambled egg or soup. I’ve had No life and basically I’m not living but just existing. I feel there is something fundamentally wrong here as I’m left to suffer and be housebound and continue to lose weight because of the pain and I felt like the Doctor not do the obvious thing and correct the bowel loops . It’s almost like they’re waiting for my bowel to totally twist again.

Good Morning,

My name is Margaret Reid Service Manager Medical Specialties, which covers Gastroenterology services within BHSCT. I am very sorry to hear you have been experiencing excruciating abdominal pain which is impacting on your day to day life. I would like to try and help alleviate your pain and ongoing symptoms but would need your name and date of birth. Can I ask if you would contact the complaints department within the trust with this information and the information you shared on care opinion. This will enable my team to share your concerns with the gastroenterology team.

regards,

Margaret.

I Appreciate your response. But with all due respect I don’t see how sharing my concerns/story with the gastroenterology team will help in any way as it was them who I last seen and them who told me nothing is significant enough to be done. Although he said loops is essentially causing the function of my bowel not to work properly. Hence why I said, then surely the part that is not functioning properly that you would remove that part so I don’t have to go through this immense/horrific pain anymore.
