"Being charged for NHS issued homeopathic prescription"

About: Centre for Integrative Care (formerly Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital)

(as a service user),

I have been attending the Centre for Integrative Care for a few years. They are wonderful and the Dr is amazing. I am on homeopathic medicine, prescribed by the Dr there.

For the first few years my surgery received the prescription direct from the centre and I would just pick up the medicine from the pharmacy. Same as the other meds prescribed by NHS doctors.

Out of the blue the pharmacist said that they would no longer supply the item and I would have to buy it myself. I asked why and got no answer other than we won't be doing it any more.

This has been going on for a couple of years and I have done nothing, as I thought maybe it wasn't an NHS prescription. Despite it being an NHS hospital , NHS doctor and I was referred to the centre by an NHS GP.

However, today I thought about it a bit more and double checked the prescription that was sent. It is definitely an NHS prescription, having the identity of the issuing healthboard and large NHS ID at top of page. The letter accompanying originates from the NHS, and uses my NHS identifying details, including my CHI number.

Therefore could someone explain why in Scotland, where all NHS prescriptions are free of charge, and I was initially being supplied these meds, (which are prescribed through the NHS), direct from the NHS pharmacy for free, it changed?

As an aside the meds are not expensive, but that is not the point.

I am sorry you to read of your disappointment that you are no longer receiving medicines recommended by CIC on NHS prescription.

Doctors based at CIC recommend treatment for you that is shared with your GP. Not all medicines are available for GPs to prescribe as an NHS prescription. The list of medicines allowed to be prescribed is regularly reviewed and updated. I would recommend you speak with your GP and local pharmacist for advice.

Regards
