In December I joined my mother to take my elderly father for a planned day visit to RAH Paisley. He received timely and excellent care during his visit.
Unfortunately getting safe access into the main entrance of RAH was not easily achieved. My mother had asked for my help with their visit to the hospital due to previous challenges they have had getting up to and into the main entrance.
The first challenge is invariably their inability to find a disabled parking space. The spaces seemed to be occupied by drivers waiting for others, parked works vans and some cars without parking permits. No sign of any parking management or enforcement.
On this occasion I suggested I drop my parents outside the main entrance. Stop, father into his wheelchair and my mother to push him in for his appointment. This proved to be a hazardous option. Traffic was static with horns blowing and blood pressures rising. Ambulances could not get in or out, buses could not get moving, a large delivery vehicle was parked up, numerous cars were on double yellow and unattended.
The whole scenario seemed quite risky for all patients, visitors and staff that have to navigate that area. This is compounded for vulnerable patients like my parents.
I suspect this is not a one off scenario so I ask that you add this sorry state of affairs on to your risk register for some attention in order to avoid an incident.
Finally, my parents are returning in February and I expect they will have to run this gauntlet again. I cannot be with them to assist. Can you suggest how to reduce the risk that they and others are being exposed to on such visits?
Thank you.
