"Struggling to support my daughter"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Neurology (Ward 53 and 67)

(as a relative),

Daughter attended concert with her boyfriend last Dec. She woke up at 1 am in the morning and seemed to be having a seizure, never had before.

Her boyfriend attended A&E with her, she had a CT scan done and thought to be normal. Discharged after hours in A&E, with view to seeing her GP to refer for urgent neurology appointment.

When seen by her GP, informed that it would take about 9 months for emergency assessment. As her mother and a nurse this was unacceptable for a young person to wait this time, given her other symptoms which of which  there are many, including loss of ability to walk and also loss of speech.

To cut a long story short and this is incredibly upsetting even to write, I had to seek private health support as my daughter was struggling emotionally as I was. It's now over a year since she first became unwell with this neurological condition, she has no support from her GP or consultant, in fact he called to say there is nothing they can do as she is now diagnosed with functional neurological disorder.

She lost the job she had and I have struggled to cope and support her as a mother. There seems to be  a complete lack of understanding and research of this condition. Her GP recently thought that she had had a stroke.

Dear Fife Black

Thank you for sharing your daughter's experience and the challenges you have both faced over the past year. We are genuinely sorry to hear about the distress and difficulties you have encountered and the impact this has had on your daughter’s health and well-being.

With your daughter’s permission, if you could contact Amy O'Sullivan, Clinical Services Manager, via email to enable us to look into this further. Can you please include your daughter’s date of birth or CHI number? Amy's email address is: amy.osullivan@nhs.scot,

Thank you

Nicole
