I attended Astley Ainslie Hospital for a driving assessment with Joanne an occupational therapist who I had first met via a video consultation in December '24.
The Reason for the assessment was as a first attempt to reclaim my license from the DVLA after suffering a major stroke in May of 2023. I was grateful for the time afforded to me in all aspects of the assessment - from paperwork exercises to use of the simulator rig with lights and accelerator and brake pedals. After these the occupational therapist took me out for a short drive around the hospital grounds before we left these to then drive around the south side of Edinburgh - in and around Morningside. Upon our return to the hospital the OT had a chat with my wife and I to discuss how I'd done. Unfortunately I will not be reclaiming my surrendered license just yet - but I wish to place on the record my thanks to the Occupational Therapist for their thoroughness, attention to detail and empathy with regard the whole process - I actually found the whole process quite cathartic - which is perhaps a little strange as I was unfortunately unsuccessful in reclaiming my licence - but I am very grateful for the being given the chance to drive again and for the time spent with me to properly assess my overall performance.
