"Helped me personally with my anxieties"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Gynaecology Crosshouse Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I visited Ayrshire Maternity Unit to attend the gynaecology ward. This was after my GP had spoken to the department regarding an issue with healing post operation.

However, I wasn't aware that it was in the Ayrshire Maternity Unit when I first arrived, so I entered from University Hospital Crosshouse main entrance. Once I finally arrived at Ayrshire Maternity Unit, I needed to rest before finding where I needed to be, so I sat for a few moments near to the reception desk. I have disabilities and had surgery 2 weeks ago.

I realised while sitting recovering, the area which I needed to attend was upstairs, but while waiting we observed an inpatient and their family realise the lift was out of order and they needed to walk upstairs. Upon realising this, I asked the staff if the lift was out of order and she confirmed this.

I have anxiety around medical environments with particular triggers from becoming a bereaved parent. Therefore, entering the maternity unit was very difficult. However, this is where the gynaecology ward is, so I didn't have much option.

At this point I became quite emotional as coming into hospital environments is very emotionally triggering for me. Then realising I needed to attend the Maternity Unit was even more difficult, as this is where my original trauma stems from.

The staff member was immediately over to me to offer me comfort and the option of using the lift elsewhere. However, I could not enter the area where the next lift is located. She took the time to listen to me and offer comfort during a very emotional moment. She was truly wonderful and I'm sorry I didn't catch her name. The other receptionist brought us over some tissues and was very kind too. When I was ready and calmer, she helped me upstairs and showed me to the correct area to attend. She really went over and above to look after me in a very difficult moment and I'm so thankful to her.

Upon entering the gynaecology ward, I was visibly upset. I tried to reassure staff I was OK and was purely upset due to trauma and not the pain.

The staff were very understanding and caring. After a few moments waiting, I was taken to a room for examination. The doctor doing my initial observations recognised me from my recent operation, so that helped to put me at ease. Once I was settled in the room, I felt less triggered and upset, so I was able to communicate with the staff better. Another staff member (not dealing with me) popped her head round, to give the doctor some info and they had a small joke with me (in a very kind way) so this helped me relax and remain calm even more so. I am so grateful for all these small interactions. It helps me feel less embarrassed about being upset.

Both doctors that were treating me (I'm sure one was training) were very respectful, compassionate, and reassuring. They were mindful of my situation and despite needing examinations I felt very comfortable and calm. They were thorough and precise and really helped reassure me that all is healing well from surgery and the new symptom I was experiencing was worth having checked but not a complication or anything too worrying.

They were kind, concise and took the time to explain things and listen to my concerns. I felt very cared for and reassured.

When leaving I had another giggle with the nurse who had popped her head in before. All the staff were very kind and have helped me personally with my anxieties. I am so grateful to all involved in my care.

Keep up the amazing work 👏🏻
