"Having to answer the same questions every time"

About: Cancer Services / Radiotherapy

(as the patient),

Everything is going well. The staff here are all excellent and my schedule of appointments works well - I have no problems at all. The heating today is particularly cold in the reception area but I believe there is a heating problem.

One thing that occurs to me is the number of times you have to answer the same questions for every part of the treatment you go through - is this really necessary? Surely all this information is already logged and it should not be necessary to ask for it each time you are having any treatment. For instance, I am asked each time about the medication I take - surely this is on my records already?

I believe in France everybody has a national health card which is scanned on arrival at the hospital and gives all the patient’s medical records. Therefore going through a questionnaire about your medical history is unnecessary. This would save about half an hour of a nurse’s time each visit. Sometimes I go through a questionnaire with a nurse and then have to do it again with the doctor.

There is also the issue of taking blood - it seems every department has to take blood. Could it be possible to just have one done? At Oncology they take blood and ask a whole set of questions and then at Radiotherapy they do the same thing again. Surely this is one service and this could be done just once?

In England the NHS app has a lot more information than the NHS Scotland one. Regarding the issue of consent it would be good to be able to put all this information on the Scottish app.

I went to my GP in April and was told a colonoscopy was needed and the waiting time would be 6 months, but then I had a screening and it happened within 4 weeks. Why could this procedure not happen 4 weeks after my GP had referred me in April?

Why do we have to complete 4 or 5 different sorts of forms for the same service? Could this not be done on line and then double checked by a member of staff? It seems to be different in Oncology and Radiotherapy - ie one seems to be electronic and the other is done in paper format.

Dear Donald1, thankyou so much for sharing your feedback with us, my name is Damian, head of therapeutic radiography and it is lovely to hear that you have found the staff excellent and the system working well, I will ensure I pass your comments onto the staff group. Unfortunately, with the dip in temperature we have encountered some heating issues, our estates department are working hard to get us back on track and hope we will be able to make a comfortable environment as soon as possible.

Thankyou so much for your ideas of improvements on the way our systems of practice could work, it is really invaluable for this feedback from the people who are having to deal with the systems through their journey. Some of the improvements such as better use of technology such as an app are really important considerations and I know work is being done nationally to get this online, I agree that this will help streamline the communication of relevant information.

Once again thankyou so much and we wish you well for the future

Damian
