"Delay on a follow up appointment."

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Colorectal surgery

(as the patient),

I did an anal fistula procedure, that is examination under anastasia in May, 2024. A painful surgery indeed, and I was advised that  the irritant discharge/pus would stop and I'll become free again.

I carried the seton wire on my anus for up to five months and the discharge/pus continued. I became very uncomfortable and started making calls for a follow-up since no improvement was obviously noticed. No good response. When i called again severally without positive response,  I then went to the Newark Hospital A&E since the discomfort was quite unbearable, they didn't understand the procedure and asked me to get back to the Grantham surgeon. I continued to call the Grantham hospital/clinic, it was until Sept another MRI was scheduled and then another procedure was advised since the discharge was still clearly coming out.

I finally had another procedure this month, making it a whole nine months of discomfort of carrying a seton on my anus. I have been advised to again call back after three months for a re-examination. Another three months of discomfort and distress! I hope this three months becomes real and I'm duly attended to. It was a mentally agonizing and traumatizing experience, honestly.

Thanks....

We are really sorry you’ve had to go through such a long and painful ordeal. Dealing with ongoing discomfort and repeated procedures must have been incredibly frustrating and mentally exhausting. It’s understandable that you’re feeling distressed, especially after months of waiting without clear resolutions.

If you feel that you cannot wait for the three months or you have not heard from us within this timescale, please get in touch with your surgeon or the PALS team via ulth@pals.nhs.net
