"Very relieved and impressed with the service"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I visited my GP to report what may have been a mild heart attack, but he didn't think that it was.  However, he said that he would contact Inverclyde Royal to discuss my symptoms and seek their advice.  He didn't think that they would wish to see me, but it was a further safeguard.  However, he then advised me that Inverclyde did want to see me and that I should go straight away.

I arrived at A&E at 14:20 where it was standing room only and the notice advised a waiting time of at least 5.5 hours.  Within minutes I was called into the Medical Assessment Unit and I left the hospital at 15:35.  During that 1.25 hours I had bloods taken, I had a ECG test, an interview with a Doctor before having a chest X-ray, following which I saw the Doctor once more to discuss the results of the X-ray and blood tests. I left very relieved and impressed with the service that I received.

All of the procedures were undertaken with speed and efficiency and I was able to go for a coffee while the results of the tests were processed.  The daunting feeling that I experienced as I walked into A&E changed dramatically to one of awe at the spectacular treatment that I received.  I expressed my gratitude to the staff at the time, but I think such positive experiences should be given wider coverage in view of the negative stories that one hears more often.

Dear Howfx36

Thank you so much indeed for your kind words on Care Opinion. I am pleased that you had a very positive experience at IRH and that you were treated promptly. Our ED departments across the country are facing major challenges with high numbers of daily attendances. It is important that people understand the triage system which is there to ensure that most critical or life threatening cases are seen first.

I trust you are recovering well at home and again thank you for taking the time to post your comments. I will ensure that your post is shared with all staff in ED/MAU.

Kind regards

Alison McKinnon
