"Asthma attack ignored"

About: Wycombe Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I am an asthma patient. My asthma is usually very well controlled. However I recently caught a viral infection which unfortunately meant that my asthma got out of control, my inhalers stopped working. I have an oxygen finger reader at home and oxygen was approx in 90-92 max range. I was struggling.

I popped down to the Urgent Treatment Centre in High Wycombe. I was called in by the nurse and was assessed, the nurse informed me that my vitals were low but they only had 1 doctor on site so I would have to go A&E, closest would be Wexham park hospital 20 miles out. I asked if there was at least a nebuliser to help with my breathing but I got the impression they didn’t have enough staff. It’s not the first time it’s happened and I’m actually shocked that it would even need to be explained to doctors or nurses how serious asthma attacks can be, I would have expected some basic treatment.

I did end up having to go to Wexham hospital needing 4 nebuliser rounds, antibiotics and steroids to help with my breathing, I was there for 12 hours.
