Found out our baby's heart had stopped beating and we needed medical management of miscarriage.
Firstly, the poor midwife who had to break the news to us at University Hospital Hairmyres at our 12 week scan was so kind.
Secondly, a midwife (she was a community midwife until recently) at EPAS in University Hospital Wishaw took us on. She talked to us about the process, medications and what we could expect. She was superb with us in these awful circumstances, so much so I assumed she must have been a specialist bereavement midwife. We were in such a state of shock and numbness that we needed things repeated and things completely spelt out to us. Her guidance was perfect, nothing came as a shock after we took our medication. She made a pack for us with the medications, pads and bowls that we would need for the miscarriage at home. She wrote instructions down for us simply and step by step (which with the state I was in I needed).
She saw our names come back up when we were coming in a few days later to hand in our embryo and volunteered to see us again, which was so much easier for us than having a new person. She talked us through the whole bereavement box and process of what would happen with our baby after we handed him over to them, she was comforting.
This midwife was clearly very knowledgeable in all aspects of midwifery. Nothing we asked was too much, she knew the answer to everything we asked, she was comforting and reassuring. She made what was an horrific event a bit easier.
The whole situation itself was very upsetting, I would say the only negative was on the day we were going in to get started on the medication to medically manage the miscarriage, (due to the entry system and no reception), the staff member who let us in to the waiting area didn't take our details so we had to sit out in the waiting area with happy expectant parents for half and hour, which was challenging. Though on a return visit we were brought into the Butterfly room to wait which was less painful.
