"The receptionist showed me great kindness"

About: St Andrews Community Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit

(as the patient),

Early in the morning on 4 December 2024 I slipped on black ice at Leuchars Station parking lot close to St Andrews, Scotland.

The public parking lot was not salted even though it was known that temperatures would be below zero. The moment I hit the ground I knew that I dislocated my shoulder. I was completely on my own as my husband was traveling, and knew nobody else that could help me. I got myself to St Andrews Community Hospital.

I walked up to reception at the Minor Injury unit – I was starting to shake, and pain was setting in. When the receptionist, Wendy saw that I was struggling to complete the form – she came around the counter – sat me down and completed the form for me. Her caring manner and the way she talked to me made all the difference.

After I was seen too and waiting to be transferred to Nine Wells in Dundee, I was sitting in the Reception Area in shocked, in pain and a bit stunned. She looked at me and asked if she could make me a cup of tea? I will never forget the gesture and the taste of that cup of tea.

Thank you, Wendy, for being a light in my very lonely, miserable day. I will never forget, and I will ‘pay your kindness forward.’

Dear HEBK

My name is Siobhan McIlroy and I am the Head of Patient Experience for NHS Fife. Sorry for the delay in responding to your story.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I am truly sorry to hear about your accident and the pain you endured, but I am grateful that you took the time to highlight the compassion and support you received from Wendy at the Minor Injury Unit.

It’s heartwarming to know that her kindness and assistance made such a significant difference during a difficult time for you. I believe that moments of care can truly uplift someone’s spirits, and Wendy exemplified that beautifully.

Your intention to "pay it forward" is inspiring, and I hope that your experience encourages others to show kindness in their own ways. Wishing you a smooth recovery! Best wishes, Siobhan
