"Early Pregnancy Care"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire University Hospital Hairmyres / Early Pregnancy Assessment Service University Hospital Wishaw / Early Pregnancy Assessment Service

(as the patient),

I am 7 weeks pregnant and became extremely distressed by the volume of blood I was wiping whenever I went to the toilet. I contacted my GP and the member of staff I spoke to was so supportive and helpful. They found contacts for the early pregnancy unit in Hairmyres and a specific nurse to speak to and booked me in for an appointment with my GP. Unfortunately later on my GP cancelled my appointment saying there was nothing they could do for me.

My husband called Hairmyres early pregnancy unit as by this point I was extremely upset. Unfortunately, the nurse was not on that day and we spoke to another member of staff. As polite as they were, they jumped to the worst case scenario (I cannot even say it because it still terrifies me) and they said there was nothing they could do, but then back tracked when my husband took the phone as I began hyperventilating. They did say there was no appointments available but would call us back if there was any cancellations but gave us Wishaw's early pregnancy number to contact. At this point I was terrified of going to the hospital (I've never been other than visiting others) but also terrified of being left without help.

We called Wishaw and Nurse Tracy answered and picked up right away how panicked and distressed I was. She was so reassuring and I instantly felt I could trust her with anything.

We made our way over and Tracy saw us right away and got us a room and took my blood pressure. She spoke to me the whole time which calmed me right down and distracted me. She managed to get me in for our first ever scan too which brought me to tears. She is so caring and dedicated to her job.

The two sonographers were so caring and compassionate too. They also reassured me and celebrated with us at our lovely clear scan and seeing our little one's strong heartbeat for the first time. They continually asked me how I was feeling and explained everything to us. While I was changing my husband asked them further questions to which they confidently assured him.

Tracy saw us back to our room and asked us if we needed anything and spoke with us a little while and we then waited on the Dr.  We were waiting for just over an hour, which the doctor apologised for. This surprised us, as we expected to be waiting much longer.

She examined me, with my husband and Tracy present, all were very comforting and so respectful given the circumstances and how painful it was.

The doctor assured me that I have cervical ectropian, hence the bleeding, so despite how distressing it was to see, I did not need to worry. The Dr and Tracy both said several times to me if I need anything or am concerned by further bleeding or anything else that I've to call them, which was a breath of fresh air considering everyone up until then either said they couldn't see me or there was nothing they could do.

I hope this reaches Tracy and the other 3 staff members. I hope they know how much their care meant to me. What started out as one of the worst days of my life, ended on a much happier and hopeful note all thanks to them.

Dear Artemis25,

Thank you for sharing your experiences at Early Pregnancy Assessment Services in University Hospitals Wishaw and Hairmyres.

I am sorry that the person at Hairmyres was not more sensitive in discussing your situation but pleased that they were polite and provided the contact details for Wishaw as well as offering to call if they had a cancellation. I am so pleased that you had a much more compassionate approach from Tracy when calling Wishaw. During such difficult times, when you are facing the unknown, compassion and empathy are key to helping you feel more at ease. I am glad Tracy could provide this and get you answers.

I look forward to sharing your feedback with both teams as I am sure it will help everyone learn for the future, and provide an excellent example of patient centred care from Tracy.

I hope everything goes well for the remainder of your pregnancy.

Best Wishes,

Jenni
