"Diagnosed with Breast Cancer"

About: West Scotland Breast Screening Centre

(as the patient),

I attended the breast screening clinic at Nelson Mandela Place in Glasgow  after my routine mammogram flagged something up even after the staff member said all looks to be fine but you will hear in a few weeks.

On the day I got numerous mammograms, an ultrasound ,biopsy and a “clip “ inserted as a marker. All very thorough, and all very scary.

I was then show into a room to see the Dr who had an image of my breast on their screen. they then said they had been doing this job a long time and it definitely looks like breast cancer but to come back the following week for results.

I felt sick and was totally numb. I was shown into another room while someone brought my husband in who had been in the waiting area for over 3 hours . We spoke with a member of staff who was caring , kind and spoke softly trying to put me at ease as I could feel a panic attack coming on. She gave us a return appointment for the following week and said to call her if I had any questions.

My husband and I attended the appt and the same Dr called me from the waiting area and walking down the corridor they said It’s me today- is that okay- do you want someone else?!!

Very strange thing to say. I said I was completely happy seeing them as they dealt with me last week.

We both sat down and got the news we dreaded.

When my husband told the Dr he also had a cancer diagnosis they said, It’s not about you, it’s about your wife, How rude!

Then said he looked more shocked than me and said he looked angry. the Dr seemed to be focusing all their attention on him as  I sat silent as I was trying to digest my cancer diagnosis.

In my opinion this doctor is rude, condescending and has no bedside manner at all. They also referred to me as the Clip Lady.

Nearly a year on and I haven’t finished my treatment yet. I’ve had 4 surgeries and 3 months of Chemo and still Radiotherapy to get. I feel so much stronger as a person now and would never put up with that from any professional person I would have no hesitation to ask to be seen by someone else.  Along my journey I have been treated  with respect by every doctor, nurse, surgeon etc I have crossed paths with. This doctor should be trained about how to deliver such awful devastating news to people.
