"Physiotherapy after knee replacement."

About: Robinson Hospital / Physiotherapy

(as the patient),

I had right knee replacement surgery in MPH in March 2024. I completed all the exercises as advised post operatively

I referred myself in April to Seamus the physiotherapist at GP practice as I felt I was making no progress with flexion and extending my new joint. He assessed me and I was referred to the Physiotherapy department in the Robinson hospital in Ballymoney. I got a next day appointment,

I was very anxious as I had a left knee replacement in 2019 and made a very good recovery after completing my post op exercises.  This time I recognised I was making poor progress and was frightened that  because I bled post operatively into my joint that there would be increasing scar tissue which would prevent good flexion of my new joint.
Kate was my Physio and she welcomed me and did a full assessment. My knee flexion was only 85 degrees and extension 15 degrees. Kate showed me what exercises she wanted me to do and reassured me that if I completed the exercise programme I would make good progress.
And that is my story I did everything she asked and Kate tailored my exercises each visit. It was a wonderful experience I was discharged from her care in the end of July 2024. Knee flexion was 135 degrees  and flexion 1-3 degrees on discharge. I could not have done it without her. I want to thank Kate for knowledge, expertise and skill. I will be forever grateful. Thankyou Kate.

Hi

My name is Andrew Barbour, Clinical Lead Physiotherapist for Musculoskeletal Outpatients in the Northern Trust.

Many thanks for taking time to get in contact and give such positive feedback regarding the care you received at one of our outpatient physiotherapy clinics. It is great to hear that you have progressed so well following your knee replacement, both from your own hard work in complying with the exercises and also from following the guidance of your Physiotherapist. I have passed on your comments to the Physiotherapist involved in your care.

Thanks again for getting in contact.

Regards

Andrew
