"Waiting too long for iron transfusion"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Renal

(as a service user),

I attended as advised by my GP at 9am. I had a set of obs at 9:30, was told by GP I would be there for 2 hours for an urgent transfusion. Moved to another waiting room after obs taken and then after 3 1/2 hours still not been seen,.

I asked how long it would be, to be told that there was an issue and didn’t know how long it would take. Waiting room was hot and stuffy, too loud and too bright, feeling very unwell and got worse while waiting. Ended up leaving as no communication or support.

I am a carer with commitments at home. I had to leave as I had asked a friend to take me as unable to drive due to feeling unwell, and I live over an hour away, and she has a child with additional needs and needed to get back.

Communication and understanding would have been appreciated.

Dear ZBu

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback and I am sorry we have taken so long to respond to you. We have been trying to identify the correct department for this feedback and due to the limited details of the type of transfusion and anonymous nature of Care Opinion we have been unable to do this.

If you are able to let me know the details of the service you visited I will ensure that they receive this feedback. I hope that you have now received your treatment, however if this is not the case please do contact the service directly via the details on your appointment letter and they will be able to advise on next steps. If you need support to do this you can contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team via rduh.pals@nhs.net who will be able to support you.

I acknowledge your feedback that it can be very difficult to attend appointments when you are a carer for someone. Please can I signpost you to Devon Carers, an organisation that we work very closely with. Devon Carers provide support for unpaid carers. A link to their resources and the work they do is available here.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback.

Kind regards

Lisa
