"Having hearing aids for the first time"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Audiology

(as the patient),

After years of putting off the need for help with my hearing I finally bit the bullet and made an appointment with the Audiology Department at my local hospital.

My hearing has gradually got worse over the years to the extent that I was missing out on joining in conversations, the TV was turned up too loud for some members of my family plus I needed the subtitles on as well. I also misinterpreted some words and got the wrong end of the stick needing to ask people to repeat what they had said, but the main reasons I decided to get tested is because my wife and I were starting to have arguments plus apparently hearing loss can lead to dementia.

The tests were straightforward, my clinician was very good explaining everything and answering my questions. The biggest surprise was that just after an hour's appointment I came out wearing my new hearing aids and hearing everything! And there's even an app for them!

I've been telling all my friends about them and they are all surprised that I got them on the NHS (one friend had gone private and paid a lot of money for hers), they're going to take a bit of getting used to with the sound etc but they are far better than the alternative of missing out on life.

In short I can thoroughly recommend them.
