I have an inherited condition called FAP and had already lost my large bowel to this and then I had to have a whipple procedure and since August 2023 and have had the Droitwich Community Nurses visiting ever since then. I have an internal J Pouch, that was in 1987 and suffered a mesentry bleed in 2021. I have routine camera tests and those were done in 2022 with the result being that my condition was active. So in July 2023 I had the Whipple done which resulted in my losing a third of my pancreas, all of the duodenum and 3cm of stomach. I came home with an open wound that was 11 inches long, 6 inches wide and a hand could be placed in it.
Today I have been visited by Alison and Sophie. My skin is struggling with having dressings on it each and every day. Alison and Sophie are going above and beyond, which all of the nurses do and involve me in discussions. They are always caring, respectful and show genuine care towards me. I have had the best nursing care at home and feel it's far better care than when in hospital. They are so thorough and thoughtful. It makes dealing with this situation so much better. I feel the ward I was on should offer this level of care as my life would have been so much better! They show all the qualities needed to be a Nurse so much more than they realise. All of the nurses in this team want to help me get the wound closed, show true compassion and total dedication. They are all very special to me as I would have given up a long time ago if their care had been like my experience in hospital. They encourage me to carry on, make every visit easy and they all have mine and my husband's gratitude for this.
