I am on a health journey which commenced just before Christmas 2023, as in my 80s and not having any in-patient experience I was unsure of what to expect. I became more apprehensive when I was diagnoses with a pathological fracture (non-trauma related) in my upper right arm.
I was also informed that this was almost certainly a sign of cancer.
I packed a bag and was immediately admitted to the assessment unit of our local general hospital.
I had my own en-suite room with tv, etc and given the highest standards of care and treatment, I was anxious but all my questions and concerns were addressed in a professional and caring manner.
The head of orthopaedics prided me with reassurance while explaining the surgery I would receive.
A visit by the anaesthetist was also very reassuring prior to a successful operation inserting a nail in my right humerus.
Biopsies were taken and following a joint haematology/oncology consultation I was diagnosed with high-grade non-hodgkins lymphoma.
I commenced chemotherapy on the tuesday following my diagnosis. I am now on cycle 6 of 6, three weekly cycles and attend as a day patient athe start of each cycle.
Initially, the treatment made me very tired but it became easier with each cycle.
The staff in x-ray assessment, orthopaedics + haematology have been superb, professional, kindly, and caring.
